These past few weeks I've been thinking about Carl alot. It seems like every time I've turned on the radio lately, a song has come on that reminds me of him. I did not get to spend as much time with Carl as the other cousins because of our age difference but regardless, I thought he was a superhero. The memories we did share together are as vivid in my mind as the day they happened. The day Carl died will be forever etched in my mind because a part of us all went with him. However, not a day has gone by that I haven't thought of him and when I do I just look up at the sky and I know he's there. This poem from Nan's lake is my favorite: "Some people say that when someone we love is taken from our lives that we must find something to take their place. There is an empty space where that person once was and even though it is a lonely feeling, it is there for a reason. For even God would not allow himself to fill this space. He creates it so that we can fill it with all the beautiful memories and moments once shared with our loved ones. Never try to close this space. It is our only key to the past" RIP Carl. Miss you always.

To the friends and family of Carl: I never had the chance to meet Carl, but I can tell that we would have been great friends. His legacy lives on through the cherished memories of all those that he had such an impact on. The spirit of Carl is still alive in the many charities that the memorial fund has helped, including mine (The Future of Hunting). Every time I introduce a new youth hunter to Carl's world and start them on their own path of outdoor recreation, I know Carl is watching and right there beside us. God only gives us so many sunrises and sunsets in a life time, which is one of the reasons I am a hunter (I want to catch as many as I can). That awe inspiring beauty is the same beauty that Carl possessed and is now sharing with others through his legacy and his family. I am proud to be a part of that and I thank you all for including me.

Nan, Thank you for the website address. I have bookmarked it. I wanted to leave another note... except this one is for Carl.... Carl, I have been thinking of you a lot these days. We shared so many wonderful memories that I will always hold dear in my heart... You were my first real love and for that I thank you; you will always hold a special place in my heart that no one will ever be able to replace. Whenever I hear a Garth brooks song, I think of you, me and the times we shared... driving in your mom's car together, hanging out at your house, watching you play football and cheering you from the sidelines... I wish we never lost touch over the years. Carl, I will never forget you.... ever. I know you are waching down on us all... until we meet again. Love, Laura

"Look out of any window, any morning, any evening, any day. Maybe the sun is shining, birds are singing, No rain is falling from a heavy sky. What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through? For this is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon, long ago. Walk out of any doorway, feel your way, feel your way like the day before. Maybe you'll find direction, Around some corner where it's been waiting to meet you. What do you want me to do, to watch for you while you are sleeping? The please don't be surprised when you find me dreaming too. Walk into splintered sunlight, Inch your way through dead dreams to another land. Maybe you're tired and broken, Your tongue is twisted with words half spoken and thoughts unclear What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through? A box of rain will ease the pain, and love will see you through. Just a box of rain, wind and water, Sun and shower, wind and rain, In and out the window like a moth before a flame. And it's just a box of rain, I don't know who put it there, Believe it if you need it, or leave it if you dare. And it's just a box of rain, or a ribbon for tour hair; Such a long long time to be gone, and a short time to be there." - Box of Rain Grateful Dead It rained today and I thought of this song, and I thought of Carl. He is my family's box of rain, always there and a mystery in ways but there when we need his memory to bring us together. This song can be interpreted in so many ways but I think so often about of the direction our lives lead us in and the dreams we live and the ones we don't. Carl had so many dreams, you didn't even have to talk to him to know that, it was in his eyes. I miss my cousin so very much lately and the profound and indescribable effect he had on so many people and especially on me and my awesome cousins. He was our leader, we all wanted to be as cool as Carl but in a tragic and tearful way, through his death, we have all become closer i feel like, and I hope we remain that way. Even as a step cousin, he never treated me like one...I too was forced to swing across the terrifying creek(especially terrifying at age 6) in grandad and grandmom's woods. Even though I was scared he got me to do it and then was there to catch me on the other side. His dreams and his spirit will be so greatly missed but treasured. Thanks Carl for reminding us to dream.
